From the desk

Everyone keeps asking whether AI will change construction.

Wrong question.

The real question is whether construction is about to let people use AI to make bad decisions faster.

That is what should worry us.

Construction is a high-consequence industry.

Small errors do not stay small.

They turn into:

  • Missed change orders
  • Bad assumptions
  • Delayed billing
  • Weak documentation
  • Blown trust
  • Expensive disputes

So no, I am not afraid of AI itself.

I am afraid of people using AI like a shortcut in a business where shortcuts get very expensive.

If AI drafts a change order and a human reviews it carefully, that is useful.

If AI flags a collections issue and a human decides what to do next, that is useful.

If AI helps organize noise so an operator can act sooner, that is useful.

But if people start treating AI like judgment instead of support, we are going to create a new class of very avoidable problems.

Construction does not need “AI-first” anything if “AI-first” means human judgment comes second.

It needs:

  • AI with standards
  • AI with review
  • AI with accountability
  • AI that helps serious operators miss less, not think less

My view is simple:

Do not fear AI.

Fear undisciplined people using AI in an undisciplined way.

That is where the real risk is.

Curious how others in construction see it:

Are we being too cautious, or not cautious enough?
